5 Thoughts about Virtual Office/Telecommuting

by Jeremy on February 13, 2009

While talking with a friend this week and he made the comment that telecommuting and virtual offices were something that he thought had to happen in the coming years.  I told him that I agreed with that but people were going to have to learn how to manage in a new environment.  Right now the big stumbling block is that many are afraid of being able to manage in the new environment.

In the coming weeks, I am intending to write more information about moving your company to a virtual office structure.  Until then, I thought that I would simply compile a list of the previous articles that we have featured about the virtual office/telecommuting idea:

Virtual Office – Use Metrics and Management

Outsourcing/Flexible Office Space

Green Business: Telecommuting and Remote Employees

Telecommuting 2

Telecommuting: Talk about refocusing technology!

I hope that these articles will be a primer for future discussions of virtual office and telecommuting topics.  This mindset is going to change industries and work environments over the coming years.

Are you able to telecommute right now?  Do you have a virtual office?

Managers definitely have to make adjustments when entering the telework environment, but I don’t think traditional office management is useless in the virtual office. It’s like one of those “magic eye” pictures: get your nose up in it, focus beyond the picture, and slowly step away until things come into focus. I’ve had some luck crossing my eyes too, but that doesn’t quite create the same metaphor :-)

I telework, and hope to help more people do the same! I’m excited to read your future posts… clicking the RSS button!

I completely agree that traditional management isn’t useless in the virtual world except where it’s useless in the traditional world. It will take an ability to manage if you want to manage in a virtual world. It will also amplify bad management because of a lack of proximity.

Thanks for the comments. Looking forward to your site!
