1-800-Developer??

by Jeremy on February 17, 2009

Over the last couple of months I have been tossing around an idea that I think may have some value but I am trying to figure out how to best implement it.  The concept is basically software architecture/development knowledge over the phone, email, or chat.

Why??

Solid system architecture is the foundation for business systems that can support your business for years to come.  If you have a solid foundation your system can grow with you.

Building solid architectures takes someone with a real ability to create those foundational elements.  This is not an ability that every developer has.  You need someone who has experience and an understanding of how to build architectures that can last.

With that said, most of the time businesses don’t need this type of resource on site 40 hours per week, 52 weeks a year.  This type of resource is a specialist that you call when you need them.  Once the framework has been built you will probably just need to call with questions as to how to implement new functionalities within the framework.

Another potential is that you may have junior or intermediate level developers working for you who simply need some level of oversight.  By only utilizing the senior/lead developer when you need them, you can control your expenses while still gaining the benefits of experience.  You can have the senior developer do reviews with the team (code reviews, design reviews, etc.)

Your thoughts??

I am still working through the implementation and value proposition of this idea.  Please provide me your feedback!  Does this make any sense?  Would you utilize something like this?  Any suggestions??
