With Gladinet, your cloud computing becomes local

By Robert Stanke of RobertStanke.com

For those of you who have been following my various blog posts on the web, you know that I have become a big fan of cloud computing (from a consumer perspective, always). I have found great advantages to using various cloud services, given that they help me become more efficient and allow me to share content more effectively – something I do on a daily basis. Some examples of what would be considered cloud services would be online tools like Google Picasa, Windows Live SkyDrive, and Google Docs. I happened to be using all of these, but the problem I was having was that I would need to go to these tools individually to access my files. That was until I discovered Gladinet.

Gladinet is a tool that allows you to mount these online storage services right to your computer, creating drives, right inside your Windows operating system. By the simple click of opening up Windows Explorer, you can see these storage devices as if they were folders in your computer system. You can open, copy, move, and delete files right from this utility, making file management very easy and fast!

You can also use Gladinet for ADrive and Amazon’s S3 storage service.

The download is free and easy to install. The thing I was most worried about was if the application would slow down my laptop at all, but that is not the case at all. The program sits in my system tray and is ready to manage my cloud files when I am.

There were really only two minor things that have been a headache to deal with. First, after the download was complete and the install was done, setting up the drives were a little tricky. I made a few mistakes the first time through, and un-doing the set-up was tricky and took some time. Also, I have noticed that occasionally the service has difficulty connecting to the cloud services, but it is really rare, and may even be a problem with my Internet connection.

Overall, I recommend you give Gladinet a try if you want your cloud services to be right at your desktop!

Great post, Robert. Some other good examples of Cloud Computing are Google Docs (application-based), Force.com (platform-based), and Microsoft’s “Cloud OS” (platform & infrastructure-based hybrid). On a side note, does anyone else remember “X-drive” (or was it “Z-drive”…) from around 1999? It was an application that did exactly what Gladinet does…but for free. Is that why it’s not still around? I always wondered what happened to it.

    Thanks for the comment Justin!

I think that clouds are really in their infant stages of usage and promise. They will revolutionize the market over the next 5 years as they mature.

X-Drive was purchased by AOL and apparently they decided that it wasn’t the right thing for them. So they got rid of it.

    Thanks for stopping by!
