Fun Gadget o Week: Kindle DX

by Jeremy on May 6, 2009

In the technology world there has been a lot of talk over the past decade of electronic paper and replacing the need for newspapers, books, magazines, etc.  A few years ago Amazon released the Kindle and then this last year they released the Kindle 2.

Recently, there has been a lot of hype about the potential for the Kindle DX device, which is larger and focused on the education arena.

Here’s an article about the Kindle DX launch claims by Jeff Bezos:  “Kindle DX launch: ‘every book ever printed in under a minute’

It seems that this type of device has a huge amount of potential for many areas of our lives.  The cost may still make it out of range for many.  That said, both of the devices still definitely qualify as very fun gadgets.

Do you have a Kindle?  Are you going to get a Kindle?  What are your thoughts?

I do not own a Kindle, but hope to some day. I think the price is still too much – even for the Kindle 2 (and original Kindle for that matter). If they can find a way to work with the newspaper industry and can get the cost down, I am in. Another thing the Kindle DX is missing is a color screen, which would make things like Sport Illustrated not much fun to read (IMHO).

    Robert,

I completely agree with you that the price is a little lofty right now. My hope is that maybe a competitor jumps into the market and starts to push down prices. Once that has happened, I think that it will be an awesome device for books/newspapers.

I hope that if they ever add color options that they will either make it an option and configurable on the device or really work to control power usage. Also, if they supported color how far is it away from a Tablet PC??
