This week I wanted to start off a series of posts I will be doing for the Refocusing Technology Blog where I basically do a road test of a device or software application I am using currently in my everyday life and offer my feedback on it. I would like to try and do a road test posting at least once a month, and the topic could be either software or hardware, but the catch is that every technology I road test, will have some sort of social element. So here goes!
Microsoft Zune
I purchased my first Zune last weekend. I have been an iPod
user since 2004, having owned many of the different versions out there. This time around I thought I would like to try something different, and since I am a Microsoft fan, getting a Zune made sense. I did not go crazy or anything – I just got the 8 GB version since I mostly just listen to podcasts and some music. I watch some video, but not enough to justify getting the larger Zune with the bigger screen. I just listen to my music player of choice when I am working out, in the car, or at my desk at work, so the 8 GB one was just fine for me.
After getting my music and podcasts set up in the Zune software (which I really like – better than iTunes, actually), I started playing around with the “Social” section of the Zune software. I think this is a really cool feature of the Zune. Basically, I got an online social profile up on the Zune network and it is tied to my Zune player. It tracks what I listen too, what I listen to the most, and lets me invite my friends who I know have Zune players as well to join my network. This way I can see what they listen to and like. It is a great way to discover new music and content. The Zune Social platform also allows you to tie your account to Facebook or MySpace, interact on discussion forums, and manage my Windows Live contacts who are Zune users. As you can see, there are a lot of things you can do, and I am just scratching the surface only being a week into ownership!
I know the iPod is hip and cool, but I think the idea of the Zune’s social features are a good extension of social networking. I think you should give it a try if you don’t own one already. If you do have one, feel free to invite me to your network! You can send the invite to: robert@robertstanke.com
