Google UltraFast Broadband Project

Last week I created a post about how a city in Minnesota is vying to be part of the Google Ultrafast Broadband initiative.  I have thought about that post a little over the last week and I seriously wonder what kind of impact that is going to have for the selected community.  Google is going to bring in Gigabit traffic.  That is hundreds of times fast than typical broadband of today.  Imagine the things that these connections would allow to occur.  Video streaming would be nothing at all (except for the provider or the streaming).  The idea of telemedical could be drastically effected by the high speed connections.

What kind of businesses would relocate to the chosen town/city?  Obviously, it would be expected that it would cause a technology boom in the area.  What other kinds of business would consider the area due to the new asset?

How much would that impact the job situation in that locale?  It could have major impacts on the job scene.

What kind of conventions/events could that community expect?  Technology sure.  Medical (include telemedical)?  What other kind of things

Imagine the impacts on the local education systems.  It would effect how the grade schools, middle schools, and high schools presented curriculum.  The colleges/universities in the area would more than likely start realigning their programs to support the local technology movement as businesses became part of the community.

What about telecommuting?  If your employees have crazy fast connections, would that give you more reason to let them work from home?  It would make it super easy to video conference, interact, and connect.

Could it even impact local TV? Would cable soon start to be provided across broadband connections? It’s being discussed as possibly the next big change in that market.  TV via IP.

Needless to say, this type of project could dramatically alter an area forever.  No different that a century ago when communities found oil, iron ore, or any other natural resource.  It defined the area.  This technology could also define the selected area for decades to come.

What other changes do you see that would be possible?
