Choose the Passion

by Jeremy on June 10, 2010

Over the past few months, I have had a goal to finish at least one non-fiction book a month.  I actually like reading non-fiction so that’s fine and a book a month really shouldn’t be that much.  It is really more about the motivation and setting a goal.  Anyway, in June the book on tap was “Crush It!” by Gary Vaynerchuk.

First of all, the book is a quick read.  It took me a few hours over two days to finish reading it.  Very nice if you’re someone with a short attention span!!

Gary’s book is really mainly about how to build a business around the things you’re passionate about.  Very good concept (although not original).  Gary calls it finding what fits in your DNA.  Obviously if you can work inside things you are passionate about, you should be a pretty happy person.

In the book he focuses a lot of energy on the use of social media and blogging to help you to make money on your passion.  He believes that if you choose to work in your passion and then find the right social medium you can create an audience which can in turn generate income.  Now obviously, you’ll have to work very hard to get there.  There is no free lunch and you won’t get rich quick.

The premise of the book is great and the discussions of social media was quite good.  It is recycled information and theme but he did a good job of putting a new coat of paint on it to make it more fresh.  Take a look and let me know what you think!

100% agree with your take on Crush It. Awesome book, quick read, and gets a person fired up fast!

Yeah, and the audio version of the book is even more powerful. He can be annoying sometimes, but there is no doubt you can hear the passion in his voice.

It was a pretty good book. I guess I wasn't quite as fired up after finishing it because I felt like the information was recycled from other books I had read. Gary did a good job of describing his journey which was interesting. You could read the passion that he had which was great.

The book did make me think about a lot of things which was cool. Like I said my only problem with the book was that if you read these kinds of books they tend to recycle the same information and there wasn't much that was “new”.

So I guess read it for the passion and Gary's story… not to learn a whole bunch (unless it's your first entrepreneur book).
